Speciation Flashcards
what is an adaptation
a characteristic or behaviour of a species allows it to survive and reproduce more effectiiivekyq
what is gene flow
genes will flow from one generation to the next as different families or groups in the population choose partners and mate
what interupts gene flow
isolation, when a population divides into two groups
what can happen when populations divide
the two populations can become so different that they are incapable of interbreeeding, therefore become reproductively isolated and are different species, they have diverged
what is a diverge
two species can experinece different sekection pressures and grdually become more different, leading the two species to become reproductively isolated
what is speciation
the process that results in the creation of a new species
homologous structures
a structure that is found across organisms and has a similar plan but different function
what is a pentatactyl limb
a limb with 5 digits
what does the sharing of homologous structures between species indicate
that the organisms originated from a common ancestor but during the course of evolution these structures modified and are used for different purposes as a result of different selection pressures
what is an analogous structure
structures in organisms that perform the same function but are structurally different
what does an analogous structure indicate
the organisms did not evolve from a recent common ancestor
what is covergent evolution
the process where unrelated organisms evolve to have similar characteristics as a result of adapting to similar environments
what are the types of isolation
geographical barrier, ecological, temporal, behavioral and structural
what is temporal isolation
different breeding cycles
what is behavioural isolation
courtship behaviour varies between species
