Specialized Membranes Flashcards
tight junctions
prevent solutes from leaking into the space between cells
found in epithelial cells
desosomes
bind adjacent cells by anchoring to their cytoskeletons
found at the interface between two laters of epithelial tissue
hemidesomes
have a similar function to desmosomes but their main function is to attach epithelial cells to underlying (base meant) membranes
facilitated diffusion
require integral membrane proteins to save as transported or channels for these substrates
antiport
particles flowing in opposite directions in a secondary active transport
symport
particles flowing in the same direction in a secondary active transport
inner mitochondria
contains numerous inholdings (cristae)
which increases the available surface area for the integral preotines
encloses the mitochondrialmatrix where the critic acid cycle produces high energy election carriers used in the electron transport chain.
outer mitochondria
highly permeable due to many large pores that allow for the passage of ions and small proteins.
Surrounds the inner mitondrial membrane with small inter membrane space in between two layers
membrane receptors
must have both an extracellular and intracellular domain therefore, they are considered transmembrane proteins. in order to initiate a second messenger cascade, they typically display enzymatic activity though some may act strictly as channels.
fluid mosaic model
accounts for a dynamic membrane
contains both fatty and carbohydrate derived components.
stabilized by the hydrophobic proteins, which may be found on the cytosolic or extracellular side of the membrane or may run directly through the membrane.
