What is an Allied health Assistant?
AHAs use fundamental medical knowledge to work with patients who maybe injured, ill or disabled. AHAs work under the supervision of health professionals.
They aim to prevent , diagnose, treat conditions, illnesses and often work closely as multidisciplinary terms( many different general areas in health).
What kind of setting do AHAs work in ?
Nurses- hospitals , old age homes , community health carers and rarely houses
Dental assistants - clinics, hospitals and practices
Examples of AHAs
Psychologists - mental health
Physiotherapists- movement and mobility -> recovery from injury relating to muscle.
Optometrist - eye specialist
Dietician - food and nutrition informant
Exercise physiologist - exercise for chronic conditions and rehab e.g. for heart diseases and lung diseases.
What are the expectations/ limitations of Allied health Assistants?
Need to decide treatment plan -> just need to implement and report back to treating professionals.
What are the indirect roles of AHAs?
Ordering stock , Preparing /maintains work environment,Maintenance of equipment , maintaining records of work undertaken from patients and contributing to meetings.
What are the direct roles of AHAs?
Implement and facilitate therapy and exercise programs for groups of individuals, supporting and supervising patients with ADLs(activities of daily lives), assisting with mobility and gait(manner of walking), preparing patients for treatment, transferring patients, provision/preparation of equipment and finally gathering and documentation of relevant patient information.
