Specialised Cells Flashcards
1
Q
What is a specialised cell
A
A cell that had a different feature to help it carry out its role
2
Q
Types of specialised cells
A
Sperm cell
Red blood cells
Guard cells
Palisade leaf cells
3
Q
Sperm cells
A
Enzymes / mitochondria / tail
Function= swing to egg
Features
- tail for swimming
- streamlined shape
- mitochondria to respire and release energy
- enzymes to digest through egg wall
4
Q
Red blood cell
A
Function= carry oxygen from lungs to cells
Features
- haemoglobin sticks to oxygen
- large surface area to increase diffusion of oxygen
- no nucleus so extra room for haemoglobin
5
Q
Nerve cell
A
Axon / synapse
Function= send electrical impulses around the body
Features
- long axon
- synapses to connect to other nerve cells
6
Q
Palisade cells
A
Chloroplast
Function= absorb light for photosynthesis
Features
- packed with chloroplasts to absorb light
7
Q
Root-hair cell
A
Function= absorb water and minerals from the soil
Features
- long hair to increase surface area
- no chloroplasts
8
Q
Guard cells
A
Function= open and close pores in leaves
Features
- kidney shapes which opens and closes the stomata
- becomes turgid to open
- becomes flaccid to close
- thin outer walls and thicker inner walls
- sensitive to light so close at night to save loss of water
