Specialised Cells Flashcards
What are specialised cells?
Cells with special adaptations to help them carry out a particular function
Root hair cells
Their hairs increase the surface area of the root, so it can absorb water and minerals more effectively.
Xylem
They have thick walls called lignin to support the plant. Because the cell walls are sealed with lignin, the xylem cells die and the end walls between the cells have broken down for minerals and water to flow easily.
Phloem
Their end walls of the vessel cells have pores (sieve plates) to allow dissolved sugar to move through the cell interior. Each phloem vessel cell has a companion cell connected by pores. Mitochondria in the companion cell provide energy to the vessel cell.
