They have long microscopic hairs that can fit between grains of soil to absorb water and minerals. They also have a large surface area for the absorption of water and minerals.

They carry out photosynthesis and make food for the plant.

They have lots of chloroplasts that absorb light for photosynthesis. They also have a tall, long shape which gives them a large surface area for the absorption of light.
