Q

What are specialised cells

A

-cells maybe specialised to carry out a specific function
-cells specialise by undergoing differentiation
-> DIFFERENTIATION is when the cell gains new sub-cellular structures in order to be more suited for it’s job

Sperm cells

A
  • specialised for reproduction
  • streamlined head aids in swimming
  • carry’s enzymes in its head to digest through the egg cell membrane
  • long tail aids in swimming
  • function of sperm is to get male DNA to the female DNA

Nerve Cell

A
  • specialised for rapid signalling
  • has branched connections at their ends to connect to other nerve cells and form a network throughout the body
  • cells are long to cover more distance
  • function of nerve is to carry electrical signals from one part of body to another

Root Hair

A
  • specialised for absorbing water and minerals
  • cells that grow on the surface of plant roots which grow into long “hairs” that stick out into the soil
  • gives the plant a big surface area for absorbing water and minerals from the soil

Q

Xylem and Phloem cells

A
  • xylem is specialised to transport water and mineral ions up the plant from the roots to the shoots and phloem is specialised to carry photosynthesis (food) to all parts of the plants.
  • lignin causes cells to die, they become hollow in the centre and phloem cells have very few sub cellular structures, so substances can flow through them
