Specialised Cells Flashcards
Small intestine cell
Makes up the inner-lining of the small intestine and absorbs nutrients. Has microvilli to increase the surface area for absorption
Red blood cell
Collects oxygen from the lungs and carries it around the body to cells so it can be used for respiration. Contains a chemical which helps it stick to oxygen molecules
Egg cell
Female sex cell. Fertilised by a male sperm so it can be developed into a foetus (baby). Nucleus contains half a set of genetic material from the mother
Sperm cell
Male sex cell. Fertilises a female egg cell so that it can develop into a foetus (baby). Nucleus contains half a set of genetic information from the father
Nerve cell
Quickly sends and receives electrical messages to and from the brain and the nervous system. Has a long thin shape which makes it faster to send electrical impulses
Root hair cell
Absorbs water and nutrients. Has long thin hairs that increase the surface area for absorption
Palisade cell
Carries out photosynthesis. Contains chloroplasts for photosynthesis
Xylem cell
Transports water and solutes from the roots to the leaves. Has a thick, strengthened cell wall
