Specialised Cells Flashcards
What are specialised cells?
Cells that are adapted to do a specific/certain job within a living organism.
What is the function of a red blood cell?
To carry oxygen around the body
How are red blood cells specialised?
(I) no nucleus so more space for oxygen
(II) Biconcave shape ton increase surface area
(III)Haemoglobin to bind to the oxygen
What is the function of a white blood cell?
To defend the body from diseases
How are white blood cells specialised?
(I) can change shape to engulf bacteria
(II) Can destroy bacteria and other microbes
What is the function of a ciliated epithelial cell?
To move mucus from the airways
How are ciliated epithelial cells specialised?
(I) Cilia (tiny hairs) to move mucus.
(II) Lots of mitochondria so enough energy to move cilia
What is the function of a nerve cell?
To carry electrical impulses
How are nerve cells specialised?
(I) Connections on both ends to connect to muscles
(II) Long to reach all areas of the body.
What is the function of a root hair cell?
To absorb water and minerals
Why are root hair cells specialised?
(I) Extension to increase the surface area
(II) Large vacuole to store water and minerals
What is the function of a Palisade cell?
To carry out photosynthesis
Why are palisade cells specialised?
(I) Large surface area to absorb sunlight
(II) Lots of chloroplasts to carry out photosynthesis
What is the function of a guard cell?
To control water loss in plants
What are the specialised cells in a plant?
Palisade cells, guard cells and root hair cells etc.
