Specialised Cells Flashcards
What is the difference between breathing (ventilation) and respiration
Breathing: Physical process of inhaling and exhaling air
Respiration: Is a chemical reaction which happens in ever cell to produce energy
What is the chemical formula for respiration?
O2 + Glucose ———-> CO2 + H20
Oxygen + Glucose —–> Carbon Dioxide + Water + Energy
Where does the oxygen and glucose come from in respiration
Glucose: is sugar which comes from our food and drink
Oxygen comes from: Breathe in
What are some adaptations of red blood cells which help it to do its function?
- Biconcave/disc shaped which increases the surface area to increase the amount of oxygen binding in the cell
- No nucleus so there is more space for oxygen
- Contains haemoglobin which binds to the oxygen
What is the function of the red blood cells?
Transports oxygen around the body
Adaptations of nerve cells
Long Axon – able to transmit electrical nerve signals along a long distance
Branched dendrites - allows for extensive connections with other nerve cells
Myelin Sheath - Electrical insulation of the cell to prevent nerve impulse from being lost
