Specialisation & Division of Labour Flashcards
Division of Labour
3
Dividing the production process into different stages enables workers to focus on specific tasks, first proposed by Adam Smith
e.g. a car factory where workers specialise in one part of the car, such as the wheels
Can greatly increase output per unit of factors of production
Division of Labour Advantages
4
Workers only have to be taught how to perform one task, saving time and money
Machines can constantly be kept in use
Workers become more productive as time is not lost between different tasks
Workers become specialised in their specific task, meaning they perform it to a higher level
Division of Labour Disadvantages
Workers can become very bored and have low moral, which can lead to mistakes
A hold-up one one area of the production line could halt the entire thing
