Special Topic: A Tale of Two Bodies of Water Flashcards
replica of the same room better memory
- they went underwater
- the finding does not proved 100%
how do we valuete a replication
- to eveluate the study we must consider what it was trying to accomplish
types of replica
direct replication
* exact method
* aim to verify that original study
* the same study produce the same results
concept replication
* can be same method or modified to improve/adress limitations
* aim to verify that original construct/phenomenon is real
* assuming we are mesuring the same thing, do er get similar results
is a spectrum
same lab replication
- prove own findings with converging evidence
- usually - not always bigger sample
- sometimes makes changes that shoudn’t affect the result is the systematic and or hipothesis driven way
independent lab
- get authors invited-
large-scale collaboration
have many different labs that test the same same hipothaseis and pool data
methods identical expcet
- undraduate divers vs club diver
- words chosen from toronto vs celex words
- open water vs heated indoor pool
- depth of 7m during wet condition vs max depth of 1.8 m during wet condition
- exp.1 did not switch locations vs switched locations between learning recall
- tested across 4 days, one condition per day vs alll in one day
results
- main effect of learning enviroment ( dry >wet) - original
- no main effect of recall enviroment (dry=wet) - replication
- unlike the original,no interaction between the two; effect of recall enviroment did not differ significally between dry learning and wet learning
Results
Original study found that where you/environment learn and recall matter, these two interact with each other
While the replica, found no such thing. Neither did the learning environment or recall environment impact how much did they recall . There was no interaction between those two
