Special tests - hand / wrist / elbow Flashcards
What is the Mill’s test?
- This test assesses for the presence of lateral epicondylitis by stretching the wrist extensor, which attaches to the lateral epicondyle via the common extensor tendon
What is a positive Mill’s test?
- This test is positive if the pain is felt at the lateral epicondyle
What is Cozens test?
- This test assesses for the presence of lateral epicondylitis by contracting the wrist extensors against resistance
What is a positive cozens test?
- Pain at the LE is a positive sign
What is EXTENSOR DIGITORUM COMMUNIS (EDC) RESISTANCE TESTING?
- This test activates the EDC and its tendon to test for lateral epicondylitis
What is a positive extensor digitorum communis resistance testing?
- Pain / weakness at the LE with the resisted movement indicates the involvement of the EDC in lateral epicondylitis
What is the medial epicondylitis test?
- This test assesses for pain at the common flexor attachment on the medial epicondyle
What is a positive medial epicondylitis test?
- Pain at the medial epicondyle is a positive test
What is the tinel’s sign?
- This test is used to assess for the possibility of ulnar nerve entrapment at the elbow.
What is a positive tinels sign?
- Tingling or paresthesia is a positive sign
- Tapping can cause a shock to the little and ring finger but can happen when the nerve is not hypersensitive
What is the carpal compression test?
- This test is used to asses for carpal tunnel syndrome
What is a positive carpal compression test?
- A positive test is the reproduction of numbness and/or tingling into the thumb, index and middle fingers and/or the radial side of the ring finger
- This indicates compression of the medial nerve in carpal tunnel
What is the phalens test?
- Used to assess for carpal tunnel syndrome
What is a positive phalens test?
- A positive test is the reproduction of numbness and/or tingling into the thumb, index and middle fingers and/or the radial side of the ring finger
- This is indicated compression of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel
What is the reverse phalens test?
- Used to assess for carpal tunnel syndrome
What is a positive reverse phalens test?
- A positive test is the reproduction of numbness and/or tingling into the thumb, index and middle fingers and/or the radial side of the ring finger
- This is indicated for compression of the median nerve in carpal tunnel
What is tinel’s sign?
- This test is sued to assess for carpal tunnel syndrome
What is a positive tinels sign?
- A positive test is the reproduction of numbness and/or tingling into the thumb, index and middle fingers and/or radial side of the ring finger
- The sensation is felt distal to the area of tapping
- Tinel’s at the elbow, this can be positive in a healthy subject
What is the manual muscle test EPL?
- This test assesses for the presence of DQT
What is the manual muscle test EPB?
- This test assesses for the presence of DQT
What is a manual muscle test APL?
- This test assesses for the presence of DQT.
What is FINKELSTEIN TEST – DQT?
- This test assesses the presence of DQT
What is a positive Finkelstein test?
- The positive test is pain in the ABL/EPB felt from LU7, LU9/LI
