What does Alcian Blue stain for?
Mucins (glycosaminoglycans).
What stains could you use to detect mucin?
Alcian Blue, Mucicarmine, colloidal iron.
What does PAS stain?
Carbohydrate macromolecules (glycogen & glycoprotein). Can also stain basal layer, collagen & primary cells.
What stain is suitable to detect Noscardia and Rhodococus equi?
Ziehl-Neelsen stain/ Acid fast.
What stains should be used to detect Mycobacterium?
1)Ziehl-Neelsen
2) Modified Acid fast (Fite-Faraco).
What does Gomori’s stain help visualise?
Collagen & smooth muscle fibres.
What does Masson’s Trichome stain?
Muscle, collagen fibres, fibrin & erythrocytes.
What stains can be used for collagen?
Gomori’s, Masson’s Trichome, Van Gieson,PAS.
What stain is specific for collagen?
Van Gieson.
What stain can be used to visualise elastic fibres?
Orcein or Verhoeff-Van Gieson. Review Mannolis lecture for specific ans.
What stain is used to visualise eosinophils?
Luna stain.

What stain can be used to visualise calcium deposits?
Von Kossa stain.
What colour does Alcian blue (at pH 2.5) stain mucin?
Blue-green.
What colour does mucicarmine stain mucin?
Red.
Can PAS be used to stain mucin?
