Special Senses- Hearing/Balance Flashcards
Auricle
Outside of ear
External auditory canal
Lined with hairs and ceruminous glands that produce wax
Tympanic membrane
Thin membrane of 2 layers of epithelium. Border between external and middle ear
Ossicles
Malleus, Incus, Stapes. 3 bones in middle ear carry vibration from tympanic membrane to oval window
Bony labyrinth
in temporal bone. allow auditory and vestibular nerves and accompanying blood vessels enter inner ear
Eustachian tube
opens into pharynx equalizes air pressure
Cochlea
hearing, full of fluid, sound vibration, electrical pulses
Vestibule
balance, communicate; anteriorly with cochlea and superior with semi circles
Semicircular canals
Balance; Allows brain to know which direction
Membranous Labyrinth
contains the receptors for hearing and balance; chambers in the bony labyrinth
Spiral organ
Contain sensory cells
Hair cells
convert energy that is transmitted to the central nervous system via the auditory nerve
Stereocillia
responding to fluid motion for various functions, including hearing and balance.
Static Labyrinth
Evaluates position of head relative to gravity (walking)
Dynamic Labyrinth
Movement of head in 3D space (turning)
