SPECIAL SCIENCE FLASHCARDS
A gene
is a section of DNA. Single genes determine inherited features such as eye colour.
An allele
is a form of a gene. The alleles for eye colour could be blue or brown.
homozygous condition.
Sometimes the two alleles are the same
heterozygous condition.
Sometimes the two alleles are different
The genotype
is the genetic make-up of an individual.
The phenotype
is how the genotype shows itself. This is usually how a living thing appears.
A dominant allele
will always show itself (even if there is only one dominant allele present).
A recessive allele
is hidden if the dominant allele is present
A gamete
is a sex cell. In animals the gametes are sperm and egg cells.
A chromosome
is a linear arrangement of genes.
