Special Relativity basic concepts Flashcards
Reference system
X,y,z system associated with an object
Special relativity
Studies inertial systems
Inertial reference system
A system that moves with a constant velocity relative to another
Non-inertial system
A system that moves with acceleration relative to another
General relativity
Studies of non-inertial systems
Absolute system
A system at absolute rest. All other systems are compared to it and it does not exist
Relative speed
Any speed on an object relative to another object
Relativistic speed
Any speed bigger than 0.1 c (c/celerity=3x10^8 m/s). If you move at relativistic speed you experience time dilation, length contraction and mass increase
The speed of light
3x10^8 m/s- assumed to be the fastest speed in the universe as well as assumed to remain the same in a vacuum of space
1 postulate of relativity
The laws of physics are the same in all inertial systems of reference or
All inertial systems are equal
2 postulate oF relativity
Speed of light is constant in a vacuum regardless of the sPeed of the light source or the speed of the observer
