Speaking Flashcards
Greeting and introduction
Good morning/afternoon/evening, I’m Dr. A
Start with an open question
What brings you along here today?
Ask about location of problem
Can you tell me where it hurts?
Use present perfect to ask ‘How long’
How long have you experienced this (pain/problem?)
Use present perfect to sum up one part of the consutation
So, we’ve discussed (your symptoms…)
Use ‘now let’s’ to move to a new part of the consultation
Now, let’s move to discuss (the diagnosis)
Ask a follow up question with ‘aggravate’
Does anything seem to aggravate the pain?
Ask a follow-up question with ‘relieve’
Does anything seem to relieve the pain?
Ask a follow-up question with ‘ever’
Do you ever experience pain (in other parts of your body/ at night)?
Make a sentence with ‘emphasise’
I want to emphasise that drinking coffee is likely to aggravate your symptoms
Make a phrase with ‘there are two things’
There are two things you can do to relieve your stress. First, try to get outside a little more. Second, reduce your coffee intake.
The patient says ‘I’m worried I have cancer’
Your concerns are quite understandable
Respond to ‘I’ve been getting terrible headaches’
I’m sorry to hear that. May I ask you some questions about them.
Reassure with ‘common’
Rest assured, this is quite common
Make a suggestion
What I suggest you do is (cut back on your coffee intake)
