SPD and DCD Flashcards
What is sensory processing?
Our ability to take in info in from the environment through our senses
organize and interpret sensory info and make meaningful adaptive response
What is the vestibular sense?
located in the inner ear, responsible for detecting linear, angular, and circular movement of the body and the pull of gravity
contributes to: arousal, regulation, balance, postural control, bilateral coordination, spatial perception, maintenance of a stable visual field and orientation to the position of our head relative to gravity
Vestibular system characteristics
need for a lot of movement or fear of movement or change in head position
What is proprioception
the ability to detect position of our bodies in space and direction, force and velocity of bodily motion at any given time
What is interception?
awareness of bodies (internal) physiological state
receiving info from internal organs
linked to emotion and attention regulation
incidence and prevalence of SPD
1 out of 20 in the general population have symptoms associated with SPD
it is thought that 5-16% of school age children are adversely affected in their ability to participate in daily activities and educational activities
what is SPD?
neurophysiologic condition where sensory input from the body or environment is poorly interpreted by the brain
produces atypical response to sensory stimuli
leads to problems with motor coordination, behavioral and emotional response
Sensory Modulation
response made for purposeful and successful participation in all occupations
Sensory-Modulation Disorder
occurs when there is difficulty organizing and regulating external or internal stimuli in a maladaptive emotional or motor response
can impact one or more of 8 sensory systems
SMD - Sensory Over Responsive
responses to stimuli are more intense or have a longer duration
behaviors often judged to be done intentionally
look scared (fight or flight)
SMD - Sensory Under response
lack of ability to detect incoming sensory information
judged as “lazy”
very difficult to sustain a task
SMD - sensory craving
seek sensory input with an approach to the activity is erratic and disorganized behavior
appear to be unsafe or impulsive
always on the move
Sensory Based Motor Disorders
Postural disorders: difficulty with postural tone due to limitations in the vestibular and kinesthetic systems (slouched)
Sensory Discrimination Disorder
difficulty with the qualitative processing of sensory stimuli
relates to visual, auditory, and tactile perception
Diagnosis of SPD
3 difference diagnostic manuals recognize SPD as a diagnosis
DSM doesn’t recognize SPD as a diagnosis
comorbid diagnosis common: ADHD, Autism, Fragile X, other neuro conditions
