spatial+hippocampus Flashcards
Hemispatial neglect is a common outcome following what?
middle cerebral artery stroke
What is a possible neural basis for the effect of caloric stimulation on hemispatial neglect?
Area 7a “whole body neurons” in parietal cortex thought to encode vestibular inputs
- activation by ice cold water to bring attention to whole body
What are the 3 features encoded by grid cells?
spaces between vertices, absolute position with respect to environment, orientation of pattern
How do grid cells fire?
Grid cells in medial ec fire in hexagonally symmetric pattern, tessellates the environment in which rat is placed
Which features will be similar at a particular position for different grid cells?
similar grid spacing and orientation, but different absolute position
Are grid cells essential for function of place cells?
no
lesioning grid cells does not affect place cells
What did Berridge and Kringelbach
(2008) propose?
OFC mediates hedonic experience aspects
some portions may encode positive, some negatively valenced stimuli
What is the suggested role of OFC?
integrating multimodal stimulus information to give
rise to a representation of stimulus value (both relative
and absolute), to inform decision making
how is OFC related to reward?
OFC informs dopaminergic brain areas as to what the expected outcome (reward) of a certain behaviour should be. If this expectation is violated then a ‘prediction error’ can be computed and behaviour modified accordingly.
Where is the cingulate cortex?
immediately above corpus callosum
