Spatial Disorientation Flashcards
What is undetected movement with angular acceleration?
It is not detected under 3 degrees
Oculogyric Illusion
Coming out of a turn at night lights come at you
Somatogyric Illusion
Steady state turn over 20 seconds turn no longer sensed
Stopping turn gives you other way turning sensation
Graveyard Spin
Stopping spin creates turning opposite direction feeling
Oculogyric and Somatogyric illusion contribute to this
Graveyard Spiral
Spin, but greater
Return to spiral, relief of symptoms places you in danger
Coriolis Illusion
Acceleration in one SCC may be different in others
Change in head position, turning acceleration detected in on SCC
(Looking down and tumbling)
Somatogravic Illusion
Pitching up and accelerating give same sensation
(Dark takeoff- Correcting for false pitch up into CFIT
Inversion Illusion
Leveling off after climb gives you straight upward force
Feel inverted with no visual cues
G-excess Effect
G forces effect hair cells when lined up with G force
(Occurs when we are looking into inside of G turns)
A pitch up sensation is corrected by pitch down
Elevator Illusion
Updraft occurs and eyes roll down appearing nose high
Correcting illusion with lead to push nose down
Leans
Consequences of Undetected motion
(Correcting for undetected motion give illusion of aircraft being tilted
(Pilots will lean opposite direction)
Spatial Disorientation
Type 1- Unrecognized
Type 2- Recognized
Type 3- Incapacitating
Conditions promoting SD?
Coexisting illusions
Decreased visibility
Maneuvers
Countermeasures for SDO
Increased awareness
Trust instruments
Fly straight and level until corrected symptoms
Refer to copilot or autopilot
