How did the native Americans first get to America?
It is believed that due to low sea levels at the end of the last ice age, a landmass was created called Beringia which acted as a bridge that connected Asia to America. This allowed people and animals to arrive in America 10,000 years ago

What did Hernán Cortés do and when did he arrive in America?
He conquered Mexico and the Aztec Empire. Arrived in 1521
What did Francisco Pizarro do and when did he arrive in America?
He conquered the Incas of Peru in South America. Arrived in 1532
Reasons for European exploration
- Overpopulated near 1500 so major kingdoms regularly in conflict and competing over resources
- conflict between Catholics and Protestants
- catholic countries wanted to spread empires and secure new territories for the “glory of god”
- new trade routes
- steal gold and. Riches from locals
Age of exploration
Space of time between 1400 and 1600. Many explorers, mostly Spanish or Portugal, set out on expeditions to find new and untouched land

To win converts to their religion (mainly Catholicism)

Why did CC go to the Americas?
- trade route between Europe and Asia
- thought west of Europe was asia
- Vasco de Gama already reached Europe by going under Africa but cc wanted to find another way so they could have an advantage over other European powers
Significance of CC
He didn’t reach the Americas first but was first to start the process of colonisation and conquest that would transform the Americas and destroy civilisations
