Phishing
Phishing is often used in conjunction with a spoofed email. It is the act of sending an e-mail falsely claiming to be an established legitimate business in an attempt to deceive the unsuspecting recipient into divulging personal, sensitive information such as passwords, credit card numbers, and bank-specified websites. the website however is not genuine and was set up only as an attempt to steal the user’s information.
Phishing emails
Phishing emails and text messages may look like they’re from a bank, a credit card company, a social networking site, an online payment website or app, or an online store.
They often tell a story to trick you into clicking on a link or opening an attachment
Phishing tricks
Say they’ve noticed some suspicious activity or log-in attempts.
Claim there’s a problem with your account or your payment information.
Say you must confirm some personal information.
Want you to click on a link to make a payment.
Offer a coupon for free stuff.
What is spam?
Spamming is the use of messaging systems to send multiple unsolicited messages to large numbers of recipients for the purpose of commercial advertising, for the purpose of non-commercial proselytizing, for any prohibited purpose or simply sending the same message over and over to the same user.
What is identity theft?
Identity theft happens when someone steals your personal information to commit fraud.
Ways identity theft occurs.
How identity thieves obtain your personal information:
Phishing
Unsafe internet connections
Mail theft
Dumpster diving. (Digging through your garbage)
Lost identification cards.
Weak data protection like weak paasswords.
