Modern history

A

After the spanish civil war, Spain remained nuetral in WWII. Francisco Franco- Dictator ruled until his death in November of 1975.
Over threw republican government( started civil war) dissolved parliament set up military dictatorship. Political parties were banned. Isolated Spain economically and culturally. Before death Spain began to catch up to the rest of the world. After his death, Juan Carlos was established as King and set up constitutional monarchy. 1992 joined EEU switched to Euro in 2002

Modern - Spain likes rock and pop. Top forty includes a lot of American music

Flamenco- singing, dancing, guitar
Sardana- played at a slower tempo. Repeated patterns using 12 instruments
Jota- sung fast- drums guitars winds lyrics rhyme with songs about various topics

Spanish civil war

Republicans- called Rojos called themselves Loyalists
Nationalist- Rebals lead by Franco. Wealthy people and land owners and business men wanted a dictatorship like government. 1936-1939
Nationalist conquered most land around Madrid the capital was moved to Valencia. Guernica was bombed. Nationalists controlled the middle of the country. Republicans surrendered. Why- clash of government ideas

Spanish Inquisition

A

1478-1834 purpose was to ride Spain of heretics. King Ferdinand and queen Isabel married. Inquisitor general- controlled rules and regulations- Thomas Torquemadas- supporter of alambra decree- expelled Jews from Spain in 1492. Conversos- Jews and Muslims forcefully converted to Catholicism. Moriscos- Muslims that chose over excommunication.
