Spain: The Basque Country
- north coast of Spain ,split by the Cantabrian *cordillera *
-three DO’s that make **Txakoli ** - the DO’s have a moderate maritime climate from the Atlantic Ocean
-1,600mm of rainfall - canopies must be ventilated
Dry wines are made from the Hondarrabi Zuri -
Wines are fermented in SS tanks and have high acid, Medium minus body and low alcohol
Fresh apple, pear, and lemon with a slight spritz **
Soem are making more textural wines with lees contact and oak ageing
Most dry white wines, some rose, red and sweet / sparkling wines
Spain: Sierra de Gredos
- mountain ranges west of Madrid
-does not have its own DO and wines must be labelled
Vinos de Madrid DO , Mentrida DO, Cebreros DO or Castilla y Leon VT
-known for producing inexpensive , high volume wines although this is changing
**Old vine Garnacha **
at 600-1,200 m
Continental climate with cooling from altitude and high diurnal range means wines are fresh
Wines are lighter in tannin , medium plus acidity , fresh strawberry and cherry with higher alcohol levels
Many are made with minimal intervention and ambient yeast , low levels of SO2
Good to very good and mid -prem prced
White wines are made from **Albillo Real **
Full bodied wines with floral and citrus nots and medium to medium plus acidity
Some skin contact or oak is common
Spain : The Islands : Balearic Islands
- includes Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera
- 95kms from the cost of Spain
-two DO’s and lots of VT’s
Key grapes are **Manto Negro **
light colours, high alcohol and red fruits
and **Callet **
Medium to mdium plus acid , medium alcohol and red fruit
Also found :
Tempranillo
Malvasia
Cab Sauc, Merlot, Syrah and Chardonnay
Spain: The Islands : Canary Islands
- located off the coast of Morocco and about 500kms south of Madeira
-28oN - tropical influence with hot and humid conditons
-many areas are mountains and vineas can be up 1,500m =wide diurnal range - rugged topography means all work is done by hand
-grafting is not necessary as there is no phylloxera here
Each island has its own DO and the largest island , Tenerife has 5 DO’s
Most common grapes
**Listan Negro **
light to medium body, medium tannins, raspberry and plum - usually made with carb mac to make fruity, early drinking wines
**Malvasia **
**Listan BLanco aka Palomino **
**Valle de Orotava DO in Tenerife is very intesteing for vitivulture
Vines are twisted together to form long ropes , trained on low wires that grow up and down the hillsides
**Lanzarote - is flat , covered by dark layers of volcanic ash
Vines are dug into craters and surrounded by stone wall to protect from wind and capture moisture = low density and low yeilds of Malvasia are made in dry and sweet styles
