Space - The Solar System Flashcards
What percentage of Stars host planets?
Current approximations state 15% of all stars have planet orbiting around them like the Earth orbiting the Sun.
What is the name of the Star in our Solar System?
The Sun
How many planets orbit around the Sun?
Eight. Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Pluto was de-classified to a dwarf planet in 2006.
What are the categories that the planets are divided into? Hint: There are two.
Terrestrial and Jovian.
What are the features of Terrestrial planets?
Made of rocky material Surfaces are solid Don’t have rings Very few or no moons Relatively small
What are the features of Jovian planets?
Multiple moons
No solid surface
Support ring systems
Immense in size
What are the categories of jovian planets?
Gas giants and ice giants
Why are Jupiter and Saturn called gas giants?
They contain predominately Helium and Hydrogen
Why are Neptune and Uranus called Ice Giants?
Contain rock, ice and mixture of methane and ammonia
What is the smallest planet in the solar system?
Mercury
What Planet has the shortest orbit in the solar system? How long does 1 year take on this planet in Earth Months?
Mercury. Three months.
What is the hottest planet?
Venus
What physical features are there of Earth as a planet?
Water systems create only known environment able to sustain life
Which planet might have supported life 3.7 billion years ago?
Mars as it one had a watery surface and icy atmosphere
Which planet rotates on its side?
Uranus
