Space Science Year 10 Flashcards
What is the Big Bang Theory?
-Leading explanation about how the universe began.
-Universe inside bubble, smaller thank pinhead.
-Hot and dense
-suddenly exploded.
When did the Big Bang Theory happen?
13.82 billion years.
What happened after the Big Bang?
-TIME, SPACE and MATTER.
-Gravity
-Protons and Neutrons
-matter and anti-matter
Cosmic Background Microwave Radiation
-radiation fills universe, cam be detected in every direction.
-AKA Afterglow (from big bang)
What is Red Shift?
-Light waves from distant galaxies get stretched by the expansion of the universe. Shifts light to the red end of the spectrum.
Blue shift?
-light from stars moving towards us.
-compressed.
Edward Hubble’s, main discoveries?
- Galaxies exist outside our own
- Almost every galaxy observed moving away.
Doppler effect
galaxies/stars moving away has light stretched out and appears red.
-galaxies/stars moving toward us has light compressed and appears blue.
What was the Universe like before CBMR and after?
-Hot, dense, and opaque- light could not travel freely, then universe cooled, radiation filled, became transparent, light could travel freely.
How is a stars colour determined?
Temperature
Cooler stars are:
-Red
Hotter stars are:
-Blue
What happens when a star dies?-
-Produce numerous heavy elements.
Definition of a ‘Light Year’
-The distance light travels in one year.
Definition of a ‘Parsec’
-Unit of length used to measure large distances in space= 3.26 light years.
