Space Science Test #1 Flashcards
Learn all about space science, like why we have night and day, and more.
Earth’s rotation
Causes night and day—Earth rotates once every 24 hours
Axis of rotation
Imaginary line that runs North to South through the center of the Earth
Axis
23.5 degrees always points in the same direction
Earth’s tilt and orbit around the sun fives us…
Seasons
Revolution
The motion of one object around another– Earth takes 365 1/4 days to revolve around the sun
Seasons
patterns of temperature and weather trends over the course of the year
Solstice
One hemisphere experiences maximum sunlight (start of summer– direct sunlight) the other hemisphere experiences minimum sunlight (start of winter– indirect sunlight).
Equinox
Both hemispheres experience approximately 12 hours of day and 12 hours of night. (start of spring and autumn)
Direct sunlight
The higher the angle of sunlight, the longer the day and the higher the temperatures
Indirect sunlight
The lower angle of sunlight, the shorter the day, and lower the temperatures
The moon rotates and revolves
In the same amount of time. Therefore, we only see one side of the moon.
Eclipses
occur when one body in space goes between the sun and another body in space casting a shadow
Solar eclipse
Must be a new moon- order: sun, moon, earth
Lunar eclipse
Must be a full moon- order: Sun, earth, moon
Tides
Caused by the moon’s gravity. 4 tides in any location in a 24 hour period. (2 low and 2 high)
