Space & Beyond Flashcards
What were some old beliefs about the universe?
Greece- belived that the world was at the centre of the solar system
Thailand- belived the world was a turtle’s shell
India- believed the world was flat
What was the geocentric model of the solar system?
The belief that the earth was at the centre of the solar system and all other planets and stars revolved around it
What led to our current model of the solar system?
Galileo discovered that Jupiter had moons orbiting it, controdicting the statement that everything revolved around the earth. This supported the idea that the sun is at the centre of the solar system
What is the heleocentric model of the solar system?
The heleocentric model of the solar system is where planets revolve around the sun
What was the timescale of the universe in 5 steps?
1.Space first appeared about 13.7 billion years ago when the Universe started expanding
outwards from a small pinprick. We call this the Big Bang
2.In the first three minutes after the Big Bang, protons and neutrons formed. They
combined to make hydrogen, helium, and lithium nuclei but it was too hot for atoms to
form
- In our galaxy, the Milky Way, the oldest star formed after about 500 million years.
4.After about 9 billion years, our Solar System formed.
5.Humans appeared 2 million years ago, which is 13.698 billion years after the Universe formed in the Big Bang.
How do you get a satelite into orbit?
Use rockets to boost the satelite into space and use thrust and gravity to get them into orbit
What are the uses of satelites?
Communication, tranmitting radio and tv signals, tellacomunicating, GPS, monitoring the weather, studying earth and space
What are some risks of the space programme?
Space radiation, isolation and confinement, distance from Earth, gravity (and the lack of it), and closed or hostile environments
What are some benefits of the space programme?
the generation of scientific knowledge, the diffusion of innovation and creation of markets, the inspiration of people around the world, and agreements forged between the countries engaged in exploration
How do astronomers use telescopes?
Astronomers observe distant cosmic objects using telescopes that employ mirrors and lenses to gather and focus light
What are 2 types of telescopes?
refractors and reflectors
How do astronomers search for life on other planets?
Astronomers and scientists use telescopes to search for habbitle planets.
