Space and Gravity Flashcards
What is gravity?
A force that attracts all masses.
What does anything with mass do?
Attract anything else with mass.
What keeps everything in orbit?
Gravity
What is the correlation between the size of the body and the strength of the gravity?
Positive - the bigger the bodies, the stronger the force.
What is the correlation between the distance of the bodies and the strength of the gravity?
Positive - the closer the bodies, the stronger the force.
What does gravity give you?
Weight
What is the difference between mass and weight?
Mass is how much matter there is in an object, while weight is mass x the gravitational pull.
What is the formula for mass?
Mass = Weight x gravitational field strength
Is weight the same everywhere?
No, it is dependant on the strength of the gravitational field.
Is mass the same everywhere?
Yes
What is mass measured in?
kg
What is weight measures in?
N
What is gravitational field strength measured in?
N/kg
What does ‘g’ represent?
The gravitational field strength
What is g = to on Earth?
Approx. 10N/kg
What is g = to on Mars?
Approx. 3.7N/kg
What is a planet?
Something which orbits around a star.
What is the sun?
The star at the centre of our solar system.
What do all planets move in?
Elliptical orbits (elongated circles)
Are planets or stars luminous?
Stars
What does the sun do?
Give out energy which is transferred by light.
What is a galaxy?
A large collection of stars
What is The Universe?
A collection of billions of galaxies.
What is the Milky Way?
Our galaxy
What is a light year?
A unit of distance - how far light travels in one year
When are light years used?
When measuring huge distances, mainly in space.
How long does it take for the Earth to do a full rotation?
24 hours
What happens while the Earth rotates?
Sometimes it will be facing the sun in parts (daytime) and sometimes it won’t (night-time).
How long does the Earth take to make a rotation around the sun?
365.25 days
How do hemispheres and seasons correlate?
When it’s summer in one, it’s winter is the other.
What is a satellite?
A body that orbits another body
Give an example of a satellite?
The moon
How long does it take for our moon to orbit us?
27 days
Is the moon luminous?
No
Why can we see the moon at night?
Because the sun’s light is reflecting off it.
What are phases?
When the moon changes shape at different times of the month.
Where does the sun appear to rise and set from?
East to West
Does the sun move?
No Earth is moving.
Where are shadows made? ALways the opposite side from
Always the opposite side from the sun.
