Space And Beyond Flashcards
Big bang
The expansion of space, which scientists believe is how the Universe started
Exoplanet
A planet orbiting a star that is not our Sun
Eyepiece (lens)
The lens that magnifies the image in a refracting telescope
Geocentric model
A model of the Solar system with the Earth at the centre
Geostationary orbit
A satellite in this orbit stays over the same place on the Earth’s surface.
Habitable zone
The distances from a star where a planet could have conditions for life
Heliocentric model
A model of the solar system with the sun at the centre
Low earth orbit (LEO)
An orbit of about 1000km above the Earth’s surface
Polar orbit
A satellite in this orbit goes over the North and South Poles
Solar flare
A process that produces a large amount of radiation emitted by the Sun
Accuracy
The accuracy of a measurement is how close a result comes to the true value
Precision
How consistent results are when measurements are repeated
Repeatable
When the same person do the experiment and gets the same result
Reproducible
Another person do the same experiment and gets the same result
Resolution
The smallest charge in the quantity being measured that can be detected by an instrument
