Q

What is ‘Red-Shift’?

A

Light observed from distant galaxies has been ‘shifted’ towards the red end of the spectrum. This is know as red-shift and means that the frequency has decreased and the wavelength has increased.

Q

How does red-shift show that the universe is expanding?

A

Galaxies which are further away show a greater red-shift so therefore mean it is moving away.

Q

Evidence for the Big Bang Theory.

A

) From observed red-shift of other galaxies we can see that the universe is expanding. This means at some point in the past everything must have started expanding from the same point.
2) Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation (CMBR) This is a form of radiation that is present everywhere in the universe and is uniform in all directions. The big band theory is the only theory that can explain the presence of this.
