Space Flashcards
The sun and its family of orbiting planets, moons, and other objects.
Solar system
The path of an object in space that take the path of another due to gravity example, the moon orbits the earth
Orbit
Millions or billions of stars held together in a group by their own gravity. A
Galaxy
Space and all the matter and energy in it.
Universe
An object that orbits a more massive object
Satellite
A round pit left on the surface of a planet or other body in a small object strikes the surface
Impact crater
An imaginary line about which a turning no body, such as earth rotates
Axis of rotation
The motion of a body around another, such as earth in its orbit around the sun.or the time it take and object to go around once.
Revolution
One part of a pattern of temperature changes and other weather trends over the course of the year. Astronomical seasons are defined and caused by the position of Earths axis relative to the direction of sunlight.
Season
In an orbit, a position and time in which sunlight shines equally on the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere; a time of year when daylight and darkness are nearly equal for most of Earth.
Equinox
In an orbit,a position and time during which one Hemisphere gets maximum area of sunlight while the others hemisphere gets its minimum amount; the time of year when days are either longest or shortest and the angle of sunlight reaches its maximum and minimum
Solstice
A large, dark plain of solidified lava on the moon
Mare
An event during which object in space casts a shadow onto another . On earth, a lunar eclipse occurs when the moon moves through earth shadow, and a solar eclipse occurs when the moons shadow crosses earth.
Eclipse
The dark, central region of a shadow, such as the cone of complete shadow cast by an object.
Umbra
A region of lighter shadow that may surround an umbra.
Penumbra
Earths average distance from the sun, which is approximately 150 million kilometers ( 93 million mi )
Astronomical Unit ( AU)
An oval or flattened circle
Ellipse
Earth or a planet similar to earth that has a rocky surface. The four planets in the inner solar system are, Mercury,Venus,Earth, and Mars are terrestrial planets.
Terrestrial planet
A large planet the consist mostly of gases In a dense form. The four large planets in the out or solar system Jupiter,Saturn,Uranus, and Neptune.
Gas Giant
A small, solid, rocky body the orbits the sun. most Astroids orbit in a region between Mars and Jupiter called astroid belt
Asteroid
A body that produces a coma of gas and dust a small, icy body that orbits the Sun
Comet
A brief streak of light produced by small particles entering Earths atmosphere at a high speed.
Meteor
A small object from outer space that passes through Earths atmosphere and reaches the surface.
Meteorite
Having or representing the Earth as the center,as in former astronomical systems
Geocentric
Having or representing the sun as a center, as in the accepted astronomical model of the solar system.
Heliocentric
The force that objects exert on each other because of their mass.
Gravity
The alternate rising and falling of the sea, usually rice in a lunar day at a particular place, due to the attraction of the moon an sun.
Tide
Any time after new moon and before full moon
Waxing
Have a progressively smaller part of its visible, illuminated, so that is appears to decrease in size.
Waning
More than half but less than fully illuminated from the point of view of an observer.
Gibbous moon
Part way between a half moon and a new moon, or, between a new moon and a half moon.
Crescent moon
The phase of a moon in which its whole disk is illuminated.
Full moon
The phase of a moo when its conjunction with the sun and invisible to earth or shortly thereafter when it appears as a slender crescent.
New moon
The moon is one half illuminated by the sun. Accurate when the moons illumination is decreasing.
Quarter moon
