Space Flashcards
What is a constellation?
A recognisable pattern of stars in the sky
Name some constellations.
Orion, Tarus, Virgo, Leo
Why do people in Australia not see the same constellations that we do?
Because the earth is a sphere and not all the constellations can be seen from one point
Are stars still there during the day?
Yes! We can’t see them against the brightness of the sky in daylight
Name the constellation

Name the constellation

Orion
What are the stars in the Northern hemisphere near the North Celestial pole called?
Circumpolar stars
Is the Northern hemisphere above or below the horizon?
Why are stars near the south celestial pole never seem by a northern observer?
What is are galaxy called?
Approximatly how many stars are in our galaxy?
Put the following in order of size, biggest first:
Galaxy, Moon, Planet, Solar System, Star, Universe
Name the Earth’s natural satelite
What does the term orbit mean?
List some uses of satellites
weather, communications
How many days does it take the moon to orbit the earth?
Draw how the moon would appear from earth at each of the different positions A-H

In order A = moon is dark the B-H would appear as follows

Name the phases of the moon. Which phase is missing?

New moon which appears dark is missing.
Remember when the cresent of the moon looks like a D it is growing (waxing).
When the cresent of the the moon looks like a C is is shrinking (waning)

How long does it take the Earth to rotate once on its axis?
If viewed from the north pole, in what direction does the earth rotate on its axis?
anticlockwise
Draw out the attached diagram and:
(1) Shade in the dark side of the Earth.
(2) Draw curved arrow to show the direction in which the Earth spins.
(3) Label the side of the Earth on which it is day (D) and the side of the Earth on which it is night (N).

What difference would there be in the position of the sun at midday in the summer compared to the winter.
Now here you are on Earth, looking up. It is midday and the Sun is high in the South. Where would the Sun have been at sunrise? Where will it be at sunset? Label the direction of movement of the sun.
Sunrise low on left
Sunset low on right
Moves from left to right in an arc
What is a crater
Craters are round, bowl-shaped depressions surrounded by a ring.
How are craters made?
They are made when a meteorite collides with a planet or a moon.
How many days does it take for the earth to orbit the sun
365 1/4
The earth is tilted at ??? degrees?
23.5
The tilt of the earth creates ????
The north pole points towards the ????
pole star (Polaris)
Draw a diagram to illustrate how the earth rotates around the sun.

During what season is the earth tipped toward the sun?
During what season is the earth tipped away from the sun?
During which two months are the longest and shortest days of the year?
Why is the Earth cold at the poles?
A scientist working at Antarctica ( South Pole) will experience many days of total darkness. During which months of the year will this happen?
June/July (their winter)
In summer-time Britain gets a _______ day and a ______ night.
In Winter Britain gets __________ days and ______ nights.
In summer-time Britain gets a LONG day and a SHORT night.
In Winter Britain gets SHORT days and LONG nights.
List the planets in order from the sun.
M = Mercury
V = Venus
E = Earth
M = Mars
J = Jupiter
S = Saturn
U = Uranus
N = Neptune
P = Pluto (no longer considered a planet).
