Space Flashcards
Astronomy
The science that deals with the universe beyond the Earths atmosphere
Celestial Bodies
Naturally made object outside the Earths atmosphere
Star
A celestial body that generates its own light and heat and consists of a mass of gas held together by its own gravity
Planet must haves
- Orbit around a star. 2. Have enough mass to form a round shape. 3. Clears the region around its orbit.
Moon
A natural satellite of a planet
Astroids
A small rocky body orbiting the sun
Comets
A dusty snowball which orbits the sun
Solar system
A group of celestial bodies that orbit around a star.
Galaxy
A large systems of stars held together by gravity and isolated from similar systems by vast regions of space.
Nearest galaxy
Andromeda
Who came up with the big bang?
Georges Lemaitre
When did the big bang begin?
13.7 billion years ago
What happened after the universe in its bubble exploded?
Time, space and matter all began
What happened after the universe grew into a galaxy
Protons, neutron and electrons were formed
What happened 300,00 years after ?
The temperature dropped enough to allow other elements to form
After 1 billion years?
Giant clouds and atoms were pulled together by gravity to make the first galaxies and stars.
After 5 Billion years
First stars die, they explode and gathered to form planets and plantery systems
After 10 billion years
Life on earth began
13.7 billion years on
We have life on earth as we on it.
20 billion years
Life on earth will become impossible
Light years
Seeing something that happened in the past.
Gravity
The force by which a planet or other body draws objects towards it centre.
Mass
Mass is defined as the amount of matter in a substance
Weight
The weight of an object is a measure of the force of gravity on it
Calculating weight
Mass x gravity
