SP2g Stopping Distance Flashcards
Describe how human reaction times are measured
Tested by ruler drop test.
Recall typical human reaction times.
0.2 (s) to 0.9 (s)
Describe link between stopping distance, thinking distance and braking distance
The thinking distance is the distance travelled by the car while the driver is reacting. The braking distance is the distance travelled by the car once the driver has put their foot on the brakes.
Recall the factors that affect stopping distances.
Speed, View of the road, Weather, and Tread.
Describe how different factors affect stopping distances.
Poor roads- less friction between tyre and road.
Poor vehicle conditions- less friction between brakes and wheels.
more mass in vehicle- braking friction has to work greater distance, to remove larger kinetic energy.
