Soxhlet Extraction Flashcards

1
Q

What soxhlet extractor do ?

A

enables solids
to be extracted with fresh warm
solvent that does not contain the
extract
.

• The sample is placed inside a
cellulose or ceramic thimble and
placed in the extractor. The
extractor is connected to a flask
containing the extraction solvent,
and a condenser is connected above
the extractor
.

Q

Explain about Soxhlet extractot (5 steps)

A
  1. The solvent is heated in the percolator, turning into vapor.
  2. The vapor travels up and cools in the condenser, becoming liquid again.
  3. The liquid drips onto the sample in the thimble, dissolving the desired compound.
  4. As the thimble fills with extract-laden solvent, the siphon activates, emptying it back into the percolator.
  5. The cycle repeats, continuously extracting the compound until it’s fully dissolved in the solvent.

The Soxhlet Extractor continuous extraction
of component from a solid mixture.
Boiling solvent vapors rise up through the
larger side-arm. Condensed drops of solvent
fall into the porous cup, dissolving out the
desired component from a solid mixture.
❑ When the smaller side-arm (syphon tube) fills to
overflowing, it initiates a siphoning action.
❑ The solvent, containing the dissolved
component, siphon into the round bottom flask
residual solvent then drains out of the
porous cup, as fresh solvent drops continue
to fall into the porous cup. The cycle
repeats.

The thimble is placed in an
extraction chamber (2), which
is suspended above a flask
containing the solvent (1) and
below a condenser (4).
• The flask is heated and the
solvent evaporates and moves
up into the condenser where it
is converted into a liquid that
trickles into the extraction
chamber containing the
sample.

The extraction chamber is
designed so that when the
solvent surrounding the
sample exceeds a certain level
it overflows and trickles back
down into the boiling flask.
• At the end of the extraction
process, which lasts a few
hours, the flask containing the
solvent and analytes is
removed.
