SOWAA Jesus’ authority Flashcards
what are the two different understandings of Jesus’ authority?
Jesus’ authority as God
Jesus’ authority as human
What is Jesus called in the Nicene Creed?
Son of God
The Centurion quote
what does it show?
“Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof”. And the centurion Jesus said, “Go, let it be done for you as you have believed”.
shows Jesus had power as he didn’t even have to see the person he healed
doctrine of trinity and their roles
father - source and force of life
son - incarnate flesh (Jesus) and keeps order
holy spirit- ongoing presence in the world
where was the nature of the Son of God confirmed?
at his baptism
quote at Jesus’ baptism stating he is the Son of God
‘Thou art my beloved son;with thee I am well pleased’ (Mark 1:11)
what does the scholar Taylor argue about the Son of God?
Jesus as Son of God has an intimate relationship with God and inherits anything his father possesses
Why does the Son of God title carry so much power?
many Jews were expecting God to send someone to free them of Roman rule
this person would be the messiah
What does Jesus refer to himself as?
Son of Man
Why does Jesus call himself the Son of Man
to emphasise his humanity
to avoid claiming he was divine
where is the Messianic secret from?
Mark’s gospel
what is the messianic secret
those close to Jesus knew he was the messiah but Jesus told them to hide it
where did Jesus reveal he was the messiah?
plus quote
at his crucifixion
‘truly this man is the Son of God’
what are the 4 movements that argue Jesus was just a human?
adoptionism
arianism
the cathars
unitarianism
what is adoptionism?
says Jesus was born human and adopted by God
his authority was given at his baptism
what is arianism?
believe Jesus was created by God to fulfil a purpose and the title ‘Son of God’ was given to him
what is the cathars?
anything that is created is too corrupt to have been created by a perfect God e.g Jesus
argued Jesus couldn’t be God in human form as God wouldn’t want to be in imperfect form
what is unitarianism?
argue God is deistic so didn’t become Jesus in the flesh
instead Jesus has a special place as a man and a great prohet
what does deistic mean?
once God created the world he did not ‘act’ in the world
liberal view on title ‘Son of God’
in old testament it was used for someone close to God
so he could be a great teacher, leader and healer but not literally God
how do gospels challenge liberal views on the title ‘Son of God’
language used to suggest Jesus was the Son of God even in older gospels like John
conservative view on whether science disproves Jesus as God
would say science is not correct (sola scriptura)
liberal view on whether science disproves Jesus as God
argue science is correct
if science can disprove it, science is right
quotes from sermon on the mount
“If any one strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also”
“Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you also”
(Matthew 5:38-48)
