What is distinct about Mahgreb cities and architecture
Cities have large citadels overlooking everything, also contain long winding streets, most cities contain a bazaar area which acts as a central market, Architecture is modern but also combined with roman style cities
Algeria
Algiers OPEC country founded on Marxism, northwestern mountains called tell leads to primate cities and water, has democratically elected Muslim leadership, Berber became national language
Morocco
Rabat Stable politically has a monarchy, large GNP of clothing and phosphates, takes advantage of Cs climates by being very ag intensive
Tunisia
Tunis not democratic, but stable repressive of Muslims, but PROgressive of Women’s rights, Suppressed freedom of press and Unions, at one point reached 30% unemployment for 18-30 yr olds, Arab spring toppled their government
Libya
Tripoli Was monarchy until Gadaffi and the green revolution, became very anti west, is an OPEC nation, after Gadaffi was topple Libya has struggled, is an upper income nation that uses oil to subsidize social safety nets
What was important about Gadaffi
He combined military, socialism, and Islam to create better living for Libyans
What is the deal with western sahara
Not currently owned by anyone although Morocco says its there’s, was a former Spanish colony, is very phosphate rich, Algeria also wants area and supports rev groups in the area against morocco

middle income countries that are largely dependent on France and need to import most of food and water
