When did the Cape start being a British colony?

What was the main export of the Cape?

When was Natal colonised?
In 1843
What were the main exports of Natal?
Cotton, coffee, tobacco and sugar
What two countries in Southern Africa were run by Afrikaners?
The Orange Free State and the Transvaal
Why did the Afrikaaners start the countries?
They decided to leave the Cape and not live with the British and trek to the interior. They then started the two republics.
What other people were in Southern Africa?
African tribes.
What African kingdoms were there?
Zulu, Xhosa, Sotho, Mpondo, Thembu, Pedi, Shangaan, Venda and Tswana
What were the contracts signed by the Indian labourers called?
Indentures
How long were the indentures?
5 years
What could the Indians do when they finished their five year indenture?
They could either do another indenture, stay in Natal for another 5 years and then go back to India or receive a piece of land equal in value to the cost of a return trip to India
What did the workers live in?
They lived in grass huts or corrugated iron shacks
What happened to the workers if they did not work hard enough?
They were whipped
What did many Indians do after their indentures expired?
They stayed in South Africa
