What is KWV?

- Body formed in 1918 to bring back South Africa’s wine industry from ruin.
- Was granted far reaching powers in the 1924 Wine & Spirits Control Act.
- Became a private co-operative in 1997.
What is SAWIT?
South African Wine Industry Trust
-Body formed in 1999 that now regulates the South African Wine Industry.
What is the IPW?
Integrated Production of Wine
- A voluntary program that producers can enter into who who want to practice sustainable environmental practices
- Begun in 1998, and overseen by the South Africa Wine & Spirits Board
- In 2010 SA Wine & Spirits Board*, and *SAWIT began a joint program. They started awarding different WO labels to producers that scored 60% or above.
- Program was so sucessful that by 2012 85% of participating producers qualified for the new IPW label.
Wineries accrue “points” for:
- agricultural practices
- worker safety
- emissions
- waste practices
- vineyard bio-diversity
- and more
What is Nederberg?
First producer of a Botrytised dessert wine of South Africa.
Located in Paarl.
It is also the home of the annual auction of “rare” Cape wines.
What is the important current of South Africa?
What does it do?
Benguela Current
- It is a flow of cool water that flows up from Antarctica along Africa’s West Coast. It helps keep South Africa cool. The current regulates temperature by bringing masses of cool water and also cool air with it.
- Interacts with the Agulhaus Current & Mocambique Current that brings warm water from the Equator in the Indian Ocean.

- It cools the region down, and staves off rot.
- It is a Southeasterly wind that blows across the Wesern Cape from the Indian Ocean.
