What caused the huge decline of South African wine in the Southern coast during the later half of the 19th century?
Mostly phylloxera and powdery mildew, which decimated vineyards around this time. Even after this cleared up and tariffs were lifted from African wine the region still suffered from expensive transit and poor overall quality.

What is the IPW scheme.
IPW is the Integrated Production of Wine Scheme which is a voluntary means of certification for South African producers that meet WO certification who want to comply with sustainable environmental standards. Wineries are judged on worker safety measures, handling of wastewater, carbon emissions, use of pesticides and other chemicals, and vineyard biodiversity. If wineries meet 60% criteria for this standard, they will be marked with the label “sustainable wine of origin” instead of the normal WO.

SIP is the Swartland Independent Producers. Must be grown, vinified and matured entirely in Swartland. Must bottle 80% of their production under their own labels. Entirely fermented with ambient yeast, no cultures allowed. Not acidified and no added tannin. No fining or concentration allowed. Only aged in European oak with only 25% max new. Must be bottled in Burgundy shaped bottles. Must contain 90% of stipulated varieties.
