The Europeans took over South Africa because they wanted gold, diamonds, tropical crops, people who would provide cheap labour, cheap factory goods & the desire to spread white mans Christianity.

- The living standards of poor whites would be improved

- Mixed marriages were banned
- Blacks had to carry a passbook with them to control their movements
- White officials used the ‘pencil in the hair’ technique to decide a non-whites racial status

What Was The Pencil In The Hair Technique
A
If the pencil stayed in place because the hair was crinkly they were classed as black, if the pencil fell out they were coloured.
