What was the main source of water before the aqueducts were created?
- Wells (public wells for the poor)
- Complurivum –> impulrium (in rich peoples homes)
Why were aqueducts invented?
- In order to bring water from often distant sources into cities and towns, supplying public baths, latrines, fountains and private households.
- Aqueducts also provided water for mining operations, milling, farms and gardens.
What four things needed to be considered when making the aqueducts?
- Gravity
- The gradient
- Springs
- Pipes
What are aqueducts?
A channel or pipe-line to transport water over a greater distance from a water source to its destination (a city, farm, industry or mill)
What was the order of supplying water?
Mountains - Aqueducts - Castellum - Reservior - Baths/Pools and fountains/Private houses
Where were sewage systems only available?
In large cities like Rome
What were put on the streets incase sewage came through onto the roads?
Steeping stones (very important in towns with no sewage)
How should a reservoir be built?

A reservoir should be built
In order to receive water a triple storage tank should be joined to it.
3 pipes are then built leading to 3 different tanks
Where does the water go to when it overflows?

It can discharge into the middle tank

Baths in order to provide an annual public revenue.

Why is the three tank system good?
Vitruvius - water supply
- To make sure sure there is never a shortage of water for public use
- private house owners cannot divert it
- private homes pay for upkeep of the aqueducts through paying taxes to the tax-collectors
