Sources of Wisdom and Authority Flashcards
What is the definition of disciple?
A pupil / student / apprentice of a teacher.
Why can we not assume that all the different types of writing in the Bible have the same authority?
Old Testament - there are contradictions.
New Testament - hand written long after Jesus’ death.
The texts are translations which could include errors.
Why are the writings in the Bible no longer perfect?
They have been damaged by human interference.
Why is it believed that only the Catholic Church can interpret the teachings in the Bible?
Not only is the record of the teaching fallible (includes errors) but the style and intention of the writers are not always clear.
e.g the Church alone can identify what is history and what is a teaching story.
Define inspiration
In the biblical sense, the doctrine that God in some sense influenced the authors and editors of the Bible, so that what they recorded was ‘the word of God’.

Define Apostolic Succession
Authority and ministry of the Church derives from Jesus’ Apostles through the succession of bishops who came
directly after them. For Roman Catholics, this includes the idea
that the authority of Peter, as the leader of the 12 Apostles, is
transferred directly to the Pope, and gives the Pope an infallible
authority.
