Q

What is primary and secondary appraisal?

A

Lazarus et. al
He argues that when we experience a hassle, we first engage in primary appraisal.
This is where we subjectively work out how threatening it is to our psychological health.
If we think it is then we move to secondary appraisal where we subjectively consider how well equipped we are to cope with the hassle.

Q

Explain Kanners research into hassles and uplifts.

A

He constructed a hassles scale which 100 participants aged between 45-64 completed every month for nine consecutive months.

The hassles scale uses a checklist of 177 hassles in terms of how often they occur, and how the severe they are.

They were also asked to take two other surveys looking to depression and anxiety and one to measure life changes.

Found a significant positive correlation between hassle frequency and psychological symptoms at the start and the end of the study, for both man and women.

Q

Evaluation of Daily hassles as a source of stress.

A

Limitations:
Most of the research is correlational and correlation does not mean causation. There could be an external factor influencing the results. Decreasing the validity.

Individual differences- Men and women have different daily hassles as there are varying gender roles- alpha bias.

Strengths: Inavcevich- Asked participants to complete the HSUP. Measures of general health and absenteeism were also taken. Found that daily hassles were strong predictors of poor health, poor job performance and absenteeism.
