Sources of Light Flashcards
What is incandescence
The production of light as a result of high temperature
The energy is inefficient
Heat is converted into light energy
Ex. Fire, stove, candle, incandescent light bulb etc.
What is electric discharge
Producing light by the build up and quick transfer of electrons between two objects
Ex. lightning
The process of producing light by an electric current flowing through gas
Ex. Neon signs (use of neon noble gas)
When electrons get excited they produce light
What is fluroescence
Visible light that is emitted immediately after exposure to ultraviolet light
What is Phosphorescence
Visible light that is emitted gradually after exposure to ultraviolet light
Absorbs UV radiation and takes a while to start producing light
(ex. glow in the dark stickers)
What is chemilumiescence
Light that is generated by the energy released in a chemical reaction without a rise in temperature
Ex. glow sticks
When cracking the tube inside the glow stick, the chemicals mix together to produce light
What is Bioluminescence
Light produced from a chemical reaction inside living organisms
Ex. Fireflies, jellyfish
What is Triboluminescence
Light is produced when certain crystals are scratched, crushed, or from vibration
Mechanical energy (energy in the form of movement) becomes light
Ex. Lifesaver candies produce light when crushed because of a certain sugar inside
What is Light-Emitting Diode (LED)
When an electrical current is flowing through semiconductors, light is produced
Do not produce heat
Very efficient
