Catholic sources:
Scripture – God’s law revealed in His Word
Church Authority – the Catholic Church claims ‘authority to act’ from God
Natural Law – to examine nature in determining God’s truth as it is in nature.
Experience / Conscience - Do not act against your conscience or previous experience.
PROTESTANT TRADITION
Scripture – God’s law revealed in His Word. Obviously, the Protestant churches acknowledge the need for people to use conscience, experience and natural law in considering ethical principles and moral action, but there is an overriding emphasis on Scripture as this is seen as ‘God’s Word’ and is therefore without error.
ORTHODOX TRADITION
Scripture – God’s law revealed in His Word
Church Fathers – the teachings of Augustine and
Canon Law – teachings of the Orthodox Church
Liturgical Sources – guides from Scholars
PENTECOSTAL TRADITION
Scripture – God’s law revealed in His Word through Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit.
Church Community – the local community set expected levels of moral behaviour. Often established by the Pastor and/or Council
Personal Conscience – each person is responsible to God for their actions
