Elements of Perspective

  • Time - When the source was created - the time of the author, impacts
  • Place - Where the source was created, impacts
  • Motive - Why the author has chosen to make the source, impact, the motive is ‘internal’ to the author – what are they thinking/feeling?
  • Purpose - The outcome the author is hoping to achieve through the creation of the source, purpose is about the action that viewers of the source will take – it is ‘external’ to the author, impacts
  • Bias - Circumstances of the author’s life that would encourage them to have a particular perspective, impacts (only use if there is specific historical knowledge of the author and their context/circumstances)
