Q

Situation 1- In a government institution for educable and trainable disabled children, group work includes holding of regular meetings between the staff and children to discuss children’s individual concerns and houseparents problems, to disseminate information, to discuss activities related to their rehabilitation. In one of the meeting, one
concerns being raised is the habit of many children begging money for guests and visitors. This behavior was cause of many problems inside the institutions, because when one child has money, some children would steal or keep it, then the child who lost the money would go into severe temper tantrums like loud crying, undressing,
running around and other behavioral aberrations. This single issue was discussed for 10 successive meetings where some educable children agree and act as watchers for others. The staff and the children believe that to be able to stop begging is a big step towards their children’s progress and development. So the institution put
out a policy requesting all guest and visitors to refrain from giving money.
On the other hand, the group worker discussed the idea of bringing the children of a field trip to the down town area, where begging was a way of life. This was intended to impress upon the children that begging is not a socially accepted behavior, because of any one of them liked to beg, he would be left behind. After the trip, the
children were happy about the experience and they realized that their group life in the institution was far better than the beggar’s life in the street.

Q

Social worker Margo-Suarez Rand functions at the mezzo level in her role as Training Director for the Area Association for People with Disabilities (APD). As part of her job, Margo is responsible to plan and implement initial orientation and training for direct service personnel in the agency ́s residential and day programs as required by the state regulations and as part of the agency ́s mission to provide quality care for the individuals the agency serves. Although Margo ́s training program has developed over a number of years and is approved by state regulators, Margo questions the effectiveness of training in teaching the skills and attitudes necessary for working with APD ́s clients.
In her recent monthly meetings with frontline supervisors, Margo has heard complaints about the lack of readiness of newly hired direct service staff, most of whom have no previous work or life experience with people with disabilities. Margo cringes to hear reports that some direct service personnel are treating clients in demeaning ways, using discriminatory language, or ridiculing their behaviors, and others abandon programs
designed to teach clients life skills in favor of doing things for clients because `it ́s just easier ́. To Margo, this anecdotal information suggests that, even though the training program teaches a philosophy of client empowerment and includes clear instruction on how to implement this perspective in client treatment, the training may not be producing the outcomes that she seeks. She sees it as her responsibility to check into the situations further. - The case was taken from the book of Miley et al., (2009 p. 122-124)

Although Margo operates within the overriding mission of APD and shares the vision of improving the quality of life for the individuals APD serves, in what client system is Margo really serving?
a. APD clients
b. The direct service staffs
c. The frontline supervisors
d. The agency itself

A

62
Q

Considering that Margo has only a vague idea that the training program may not be working well, her current concerns are based only from conversations with a few frontline supervisors. Although this information is useful, it does not represent the full view of the problem. What do you think should be done next?
a. Conduct a feasibility investigation before calling for an organizational meeting.
b. Margo must remind the direct service staff of the ethics in the work place.
c. Margo needs to establish some sort of dialogue that accesses a more complete picture of what is currently happening before she can move to assess what part of training works and what should change.
d. Having a systemic view would guide Margo ́s decision about whom to modify behaviors and identify appropriate solutions for them.

A

Margo needs to establish some sort of dialogue that accesses a more complete picture of what is currently happening before she can move to assess what part of training works and what should change.

63
Q

For Margo ́s continuing assessment of the problem, what must be considered?
a. Examines the context of the situation to consider other influences that affects the direct service staff behaviors.
b. State functions must evolve from direct service to agency monitoring.
c. Define and redefine the working problem.
d. Margo must look into consideration the training modules that teaches directly and notes that, to meet the agency mandate.

Wilma, an eighteen-year-old unmarried woman has two children: Mark age two, and Fred, age nine months. She is currently unemployed. Wilma feels very close to her children and wants to make a good home for them. She hopes to secure a job and has attempted to find steady employment. She feels apprehensive about applying for work since her earlier efforts were not successful. Wilma dropped out of high school in the ninth grade and has few social skills. She is timid and finds it difficult to engage in social contacts. Wilma has no close friends. Her parents have abandoned her because of her out-of-wedlock pregnancies. Her parenting skills are marginal, although she tries to be a good parent for her children. Wilma ́s social worker feels that she needs an intensive socialization experience that will enable her to become more expressive. It is hoped that this type of experience will help Wilma to feel more comfortable meeting people and more self-assured as an employee. The worker referred Wilma to a local family service agency noted for its work with groups. Wilma was responsive to the referral, indicating that she needed help in planning for the future of her family.

At the family service agency, Wilma was greeted warmly and told of a group consisted of young women who had concerns similar to hers. She agreed to join the group although she was somewhat fearful of her ability to meet the expectations for group members. Wilma arrived early for the first group meeting, admitting that she had a lump in her throat and an upset stomach. She felt very uncomfortable as the other group members began to arrive. The worker greeted each individual as she arrived, and soon all nine members were present. The worker asked each member to introduce herself and to provide a little information about herself, then she briefly described the services of the agency and why working with individuals in groups was an important aspect of the agency ́s service. She stressed the importance of each member feeling free to express
herself and ask questions. She also pointed out that at each session, one of the group members would present the group with a problem or concern either real or fictional that had presented an obstacle in functioning. Members of the group would offer ideas about how about that problem might be solved. The worker would listen and provide feedback as to what had been discussed and assist the group in assessing whether proposed solutions were realistic or achievable.

During the ensuing sessions, a wide variety of problems were introduced by members, including how to greet strangers, starting a conversation with someone you do not know, how to apply for a job and engage in an employment interview, how to react when turned down for a job, and related problems. Each member was asked to offer a suggestion and, after a discussion of each, members acted out the problem situation.

Every effort was made to create a warm environment, in which each member of the group could learn to feel comfortable and express ideas, attitudes and feelings. It was hoped that the information and discussion that characterized each session would provide helpful data to be of assistance in decision making. As members learned to become more assertive in the group, they were encouraged to risk themselves more with others in their daily interaction.
